Engineers throughout Minnesota and the rest of the United States receive many requests for residential street warning signs. These signs are installed to provide advanced warning to drivers of potential hazards or conflicts between vehicles and pedestrians. Examples include signs with the standard playground symbol (W15-1), or special word messages such as "Children at Play." There has been little research done to investigate the ability of these signs to influence driver behavior. This project will attempt to measure the impact of such these signs. Researchers will measure speed choices at locations with this type of sign and at those without. The results will be summarized and, if appropriate, the research team will propose guidelines for sign implementation. A second phase of this project would use simulation to study the same phenomena and is suggested for the future.
