This project aims to develop, construct, and field-test a full-sized prototype of a robotic roadway painter. To construct the robot, researchers will use off-the-shelf linear motion components, readily available servo control hardware, and a standard pavement-striping paint sprayer. Researchers will also develop software to enable the robot to paint a variety of characters and symbols. The final step in this research will be to test the system, on paper, canvas fabric, and also pavement. The new robotic painting system will enable states, counties, and municipalities to improve the safety, productivity, and flexibility of their pavement-marking operations.
