Young drivers are disproportionately represented in crash statistics, due to a combination of inexperience and high-risk behavior. The ITS Institute's research on teen drivers is focused on developing in-vehicle systems to encourage safe driving by teens and support effective parental supervision of inexperienced drivers.
The prototype Safe Teen Car System was developed by researchers from the Institute's HumanFIRST Program and private research company Westat to help teens develop safer driving habits. The Safe Teen Car System is intended as a potential built-in option to be offered by automakers to make vehicles safer for teens. The system monitors known risk factors for teen drivers and provides real-time feedback and adaptation strategies to the driver when risks are detected.
