At the Center for Transportation Studies' winter luncheon February 10, Hani S. Mahmassani will discuss the growing interrelationship between telecommunications and transportation and speculate about the implications of ongoing technological and market developments for ITS. One of these is the growing availability of real-time data about the state of the system and user behavior, such as for use in traffic management or commercial fleet operation.

Mahmassani is the first holder of the Charles Irish Sr. Chair in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Maryland, where he is also the director of the Maryland Transportation Initiative.

The luncheon is cosponsored by the ITS Institute. An abstract of Mahmassani's presentation, "In Real Time, Virtually: Evolving Paradigms and Methodologies for Intelligent Transportation Systems," can be viewed at www.cts.umn.edu.
