SE Minnesota highway intersection chosen as site for safety study

Just how dangerous is traveling on or crossing Minnesota Highway 23 around Marshall, Minnesota? Dangerous enough that researchers from the University of Minnesota have chosen the four-lane highway’s intersection with Lyon County Road 7 as one of three places in Minnesota where it will conduct a collision avoidance study. The ITS Institute is installing and evaluating the Cooperative Intersection Collision Avoidance Systems—Stop Sign Assist (CICAS-SSA) at the intersection, beginning in April 2011.

Seminar highlights cooperative safety systems

Passive safety systems such as air bags, seat belts, and crumple zones are the traditional cornerstones of vehicle safety. To further improve safety, however, automobile manufacturers are increasingly concerned with developing active safety systems. The role of communications in active vehicle safety systems was the topic of an ITS Institute Advanced Transportation Technologies seminar held October 7. Luca Delgrossi, senior group manager of Driver Assistance & Chassis for U.S. Mercedes-Benz Research & Development, described the development of cooperative safety systems that enable vehicles to exchange safety information with other vehicles, roadside infrastructure, and (potentially) personal electronic devices.

Institute work featured in national park publication

ITS Institute research with the National Park Service (NPS) was featured in the Fall 2010 issue of the NPS’s bulletin Park Science. Since 2005, Institute researchers with the Minnesota Traffic Observatory (MTO) have worked with Denali National Park, where park officials are seeking ways to give as many people access to the park as possible while limiting detrimental effects on wildlife and visitors’ experience. The MTO researchers, along with researchers from the University of Vermont Park Studies Laboratory, have developed a specialized model of traffic and wildlife sightings. The model is allowing park managers to better understand the capacity limits of the current transportation system and the effects of traffic on critical animal crossings and migration routes.
