Plow demo draws federal and state officials

An array of officials-including U.S. Senator Rod Grams and Minnesota State Senator Carol Molnau-attended a demonstration of the SAFEPLOW at the McLeod County Fair on August 21. The demo was part of a news conference to give elected officials a local perspective on intelligent transportation systems and an update on the Intelligent Vehicle Initiative (IVI) field operational test along Highway 7 between Hutchinson and the Twin Cities.

ITS Institute and UMD conduct cooperative education/research

The Center’s ITS Institute, directed by Professor Max Donath, has developed a partnership with the University of Minnesota-Duluth campus. Key to this relationship has been Dr. Eil Kwon, director of the Institute’s Advanced Traffic Systems Program, who spent spring semester 2000 in Duluth as Distinguished McKnight Professor.

Institute is member of pooled fund project on road user charges

A new pooled fund study was initiated in June that will assess the potential to dramatically change how drivers are charged for road use. Principal investigators are Professor David Forkenbrock from the University of Iowa and Professor Max Donath from the Center’s Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Institute. With eight states and the Federal Highway Administration, they will conduct research that examines political, institutional, and technology issues to improve highway user fee structures.

On August 10-11 the ITS Institute hosted its first Research Program Review. Faculty and students presented information on ITS-related projects currently under way at the University of Minnesota. Tours of the Human Factors Research Laboratory, ITS Laboratory, and the SAFEPLOW were offered during the two-day event.

Research on vehicle turns may improve traffic flow through intersections

In an increasing number of regions, traffic managers are using intelligent transportation systems to make the most effective use of existing and future transportation facilities. One component of ITS, Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS), focus on developing more efficient, real-time, adaptive control systems.
