The Intelligent Transportation Systems Institute has released a new report, “Monitoring Weaving Sections”, detailing the development and use of a new portable traffic monitoring system based on automatic computer analysis of data gathered by video cameras. This system represents a major improvement in researchers’ ability to accurately monitor areas such as freeway entrance and exit ramps, where vehicles frequently change lanes, accelerate, and decelerate as they enter and exit the traffic flow.

University of Minnesota receives $2.65 million to improve winter driving

A University of Minnesota research team working to increase the safety of snowplow and emergency vehicle operation in low visibility conditions has received a $2.65 million boost from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT), and transportation-related industries. The funds will be used over three years to integrate technologies designed to guide vehicles and avoid collisions into a comprehensive system to assist drivers. Tests of the new system will be carried out on Minnesota Trunk Highway 7, between Hutchinson and the Twin Cities.

SAFEPLOW demo draws interest from state patrol

The Intelligent Vehicles Program of the ITS Institute gave its first local demonstration of the SAFEPLOW October 26 in Rogers, Minnesota. Representatives from the Minnesota State Patrol and snowplow drivers from the Minnesota Department of Transportation turned out to ride in the plow and experience the newly redesigned heads-up display (HUD) and the other onboard guidance technologies firsthand.
