Summary

Craig Shankwitz is the director of the Intelligent Vehicles Laboratory at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Shankwitz has been Co-PI and Technical Director at the University of Minnesota for the IVI Specialty Vehicle Generation Zero Field Operational Test, and the Technical Director for the project in its entirety. He is also the technical director of the FTA/Twin Cities Metro Transit sponsored project, "Bus Rapid Transit Lane Assist Technology Systems" as well as the University of Minnesota project manager. He has also led multi-disciplinary projects awarded to the ITS Institute, including the recently awarded Intersection Decision Support project funded by the FHWA and Mn/DOT and its sister state pooled fund project, "Reducing Crashes at Rural Intersections: Toward a Multi-state Consensus on Intersection Decision Support."

The philosophy of the IV Lab is that to understand the problems of driving professionals, the vehicles and the conditions under which they operate must be understood. From this perspective, the IV Lab has worked with a wide variety of professional drivers, including professionals bus drivers, snow plow operators, ambulance drivers, and police officers.

As the Director of the IV Lab, Dr. Shankwitz is the key day-to-day liaison with a number of public agencies, including the Minnesota Department of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, and the Federal Transit Administration. Dr. Shankwitz takes a "hands on" approach to project technical direction, from the design and installation of infrastructure (trenching of weather station power and communication cables), design and installation of in-vehicle equipment to the preparation and presentation of final reports to project sponsors.
