Research Projects

Information on Michael Manser’s research projects is available via the HumanFIRST Web site.

Summary

As a human factors professional, Dr. Manser’s work examines the role of human perception, cognition, and behavior in typical driving environments in order to expand practitioner's understanding and knowledge, to allow the interaction between humans and their environments to more effective, efficient, and safe, and to disseminate human factors information to research and non-research audiences.  The over-riding goal of his work is to reduce the rate of motor-vehicle crash, injuries, and fatalities.

Dr. Manser's work has examined various topics including:

  • Perception in driving including time-to-contact at intersections, time-to-arrival, driving speed, and distances
  • Driver distraction
  • Driver education and driver training
  • Development and implementation of simulated driving environments for the driver evaluation and training

Dr. Manser’s interests include the application of advanced technological systems for the examination of human behavior and perception in transportation environments.  This includes the development of interactive driving simulation, distributed interactive driving simulation, and the validation of ecologically valid research scenarios to be used within the context of transportation simulation.  Previously Dr. Manser was the Director of the Driving Environment Simulation facility and Associate Research Scientist at the Texas Transportation Institute.  Dr. Manser is a member of the Human Factors, Ergonomics Society and Society of Automotive Engineers, and is currently reviewer for several human factors journals.
