What is a Research Module?

A Research Module is a structured research opportunity in which students will research a specific topic that has been provided by the teacher.  The teacher also provides the research material which can include web sites, newspaper and magazine articles,  books and teacher created information or data.  Research Modules are made specifically to provide students with an opportunity to practice the research method.

Online research modules have the following characteristics:

  1. Students are responsible  for their own learning.
  2. Students are  engaged in the task.
  3. Students act with forethought.
  4. Students work in teams that:
    • have a clear focus upon a single essential question which calls for problem solving or decision-making.
    • include assessment throughout the entire process, not just at the end.
    • explore information from media center sources such as the Electric Library as well as the "free Internet."

Students will be provided with a topic to research and all of the possible information sources you need.  The students job is to search out the information from what is provided and come up with an answer to the research question.  The Research Module will help students learn and follow the steps of the Research Cycle:

  1. Question
  2. Plan
  3. Gather
  4. Sort
  5. Synthesize
  6. Evaluate
  7. Report
