Engineering students at the University of Minnesota are encouraged to participate in the Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition (IGVC), a national competition of student-designed robotic vehicles that compete to navigate routes and find locations based on coordinates. Participation gives students invaluable real-world design and project management experience.

The Student Essay Competition, given at the ITS America Annual Meeting, is designed to encourage student interest and future participation in the development of Intelligent Transportation Systems and solutions.
The Collegiate Student Safety Technology Design Competition gives young scholars from Asia-Pacific, Europe, and North America the opportunity to design, build, and demonstrate a potentially cost effective conceptual scale model of a vehicle safety technology.
